The reason for this is that historically, Shigure was a destroyer that was known for being lucky and unsinkable, having participated in many battles and survive to fight another day until she was sunk in 1945.

The same can be said for Yukikaze, being one of the very few IJN vessels that survived the entirety of WWII, she was then transferred to the Republic of China Navy where she was renamed as Dan Yang until she was scrapped in 1970... a far better outcome than Nagato who was used as a test target for nuclear bombs.

This explains why the anime is showcasing all other characters having interest in those two, because they are true survivors and veterans of many battles, and that can be seen in today's episode when Yukikaze literally took control of the battlefield.

No, she's not a new ace or something, she's actually one of the most experienced Shipgirls the fleet has, because historically she was known for being unsinkable and lucky during WWII.

I have a feeling she is (or will be in a later episode, and not just because she's the main character here). Having the others call her "Shigure of Sasebo" seems like there's more to it than just her being from there (for example, past combat experience that earned her that title). Shigure seems like she has past fighting experience, even before she was part of the group with Yamashiro, Fuso, Mogami, etc.

For those who, like me have been waiting for episode 6 to drop, it looks as though we're waiting again. Episode 6 is coming on January 19th. We're reaching the point where an 8 episode anime is taking as long to conclude as a 24 episode did in the past.
I've said it before but I really don't understand why anime isn't preproduced before release. This would totally avoid things like unforeseen delays (earthquakes, typhoons, the flu season) and constantly working the staff to death to meet airing deadlines.

Shigure is still suffering from most of her past unit being wiped out.

Can't really blame her after what she experienced during her career, I highly recommend reading her entry in wikipedia to understand her behavior properly.

But the TLDR is: She always emerged undamaged from several battles and as the sole surviving Japanese warship from two.

The conversation Shigure had with Isokaze & Hamakaze when they were eating seems like they were talking about the whole "you die once when your physical body passes away & again when people stop remembering you" thing. In this case, Shigure is remembering the other ship girls who have left & it's affecting her.

Seeing the girls, their interactions and the story unfold... it brings a tear to my eye, this is the Kancolle anime we deserved so many years ago, not the "cute girls doing cute things" that happened.

I also love that we're getting to see more Shipgirls, because I was not expecting to see submarines and them being I-58 and I-47, and next week we're getting Ise and Hyuuga? Stop, my heart can only take so much... but keep them coming!

Oh and it seems a lot of people are wondering why Shigure and Yukikaze are like the especial girls of the bunch... Well, both ships were known for being lucky and unsinkable back in WWII, so you can imagine why there's so much interest in the two of them being part of the same fleet.
